ANC finally announce candidate to take on DA in blue-ward
Cllr Pretorius served the communities for years, and the DA is confident that it will retain the ward with its candidate Elsie Vermooten.
The ANC has introduced Mr Akhalwaya Mahmood as the party’s candidate for the by-election to be held in Gholfsig and Clubville on June 26.
The IEC declared a vacancy after the resignation of Alderman Jos Pretorius due to ailing health.
Cllr Pretorius served the communities for years, and the DA is confident that it will retain the ward with its candidate Elsie Vermooten.
Vermooten has been active behind the scenes in the DA for many years, and as ward 14 resident herself, often assisted Cllr Pretorius with his day-to-day running of the ward.
Ms Vermooten was also selected as the DA’s Nkangala constituency chairperson at the start of the year.
The Middelburg and Hendrina Residents Front entered the race with local pastor and attorney Tinus van der Merwe on the green ticket.
EFF matriarch and PR councillor Ntombizodwa Mthombeni will represent the red berets at the ballot-box.
The FF+ is the only party represented in council that will not contest the ward.
