Multiple leaks ignored

Multiple leaks resulting from pipe-bursts in Klip- and Rivier Street that have gone ignored throughout the night are yet another sign of a rapid decline in service delivery from the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

Two residents have turned to the Middelburg Observer after reporting the leak in Rivier Street on numerous occasions.

One of the residents said that municipal workers responded to the scene, where they were seen standing and watching the fresh water spraying from the pipe but no attempt was made to fix it.

The second resident who came forward acknowledged that the water was still spewing out in Rivier Street earlier this morning.

DA Ward Councillor, San Mari Wait, confirmed that the pipe in Rivier Street was gushing water throughout the night, and that “hundreds of attempts to report it were ignored.”

The broken valve has been leaking consistently for four years.

“I have been struggling with water leaks in this area for years now, specifically a broken water valve on the corner of John Magagula and Dam Street, which was reported four years ago that has still not been fixed.”

Cllr. Wait said that the municipality informed her that the valve in question had to be imported from overseas, but she hardly feels it validates a four year waiting period.

She also received complaints of a pipe burst in Klip Street, which is also gushing out fresh water at high pressure.

A request for comment has been sent to the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, but no response was received by the time of publication.
