Spike gangs target N12 yet again

Extreme caution is advised to those driving on the N12 after five reported spiking incidents happened last night.

The incidents occurred on the N12 between the Petroport and eMalahleni, with security groups urging drivers to remain vigilant.

The details of one incident were shared on a WhatsApp group, where a man travelling alone stopped his car after hitting an object. He was then taken deep into the veld and held hostage for an hour by two men while two other suspects went to an ATM to draw cash from his account.

He was also allegedly hit on the head and across the face with a firearm.

This follows recent incidents of spikes being used by criminals, with Glencore Chief Operating Officer Rassie Alberts mandating all meetings end at 16:00 for all employees driving on the N12 and N4 highways to travel in daylight.

This was in response to a police-reported increase in spike-related incidents.

Many have suffered at the hands of these ‘spike-strip’ gangs, with Columbus Stainless employee and mother Faith Shabangu being killed on the N4 while attempting to flee from her assailants.
