Supposed EFF members arrested for incitement released on R1000 bail each

Justice delayed, is justice denied...

The four supposed EFF members arrested for inciting public violence on Friday last week, were granted release on R1000 bail each.

In contrast to their quick and efficient bail application hearings, Piet Groenewald, Stephan Greeff and Francois van der Merwe remains behind bars after postponements of their bail applications in separate appearances this week.

Groenewald and Greef will have spent almost an entire two weeks in lockup, if the court decides to grant them bail at their next appearance Wednesday.

Van der Merwe will appear for a formal bail application on Thursday., marking seven days in custody.

Both Groenewald and Greeff have also received medical attention due to their arrests.

Tshepo Mokaba, Tumelo Mpati, Tebogo Motau and Joseph Mokgeri, however, will sleep in their own beds tonight, after also serving seven days in lockup.

They were arrested for incitement of public violence after insisting that Groenewald and Greeff should be locked up without bail, or face the consequences of vigilante justice.

Mokaba, Mpati, Motau and Mokgeri made a brief appearance in court on Monday, where bail proceedings were postponed till today.

A small group of EFF supporters gathered outside court today to demand their release.

In one quirky TikTok comment about the EFF picket outside court, a Middelburg Observer follower remarked that it would be difficult for the female EFF protesters to flee wearing such long skirts.
