Two accused of rape appear in court

Two suspects of separate rape cases appeared in the Middelburg and Standerton Magistrates' Courts yesterday.

In the first incident, a 65-year-old woman alleges that she was busy at her work place on Monday, 08 April, when she was allegedly confronted by a middle-aged suspect who forcefully raped her.

Her desperate cries for help were unheard.

The assault was reported to her employers who assisted her and ensured that she open a case.

Thereafter, an investigation was conducted by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, which led to the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect.

The suspect appeared at the Standerton Magistrates’ Court on 10 April and the case was postponed to 23 April for a formal bail application. The suspect is remanded in custody.

12-year-old boy raped while visiting grandmother

In a separate incident, a 42-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old boy in Mhluzi on 05 April.

According to information, the minor was visiting his grandmother when the suspect allegedly grabbed him and forced herself on him.

The female suspect was traced and apprehended by the police on Monday, 08 April.

The suspect appeared at the Middleburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 10 April, and the case was postponed to 16 April for a formal bail application. The suspect is remanded in custody.

Woman raped in Lydenburg

Police are also investigating an incident where a female victim was raped in Lydenburg whilst on her way home on Monday, 08 April at around 00:15.

The suspect allegedly grabbed the victim and pressed a cloth against her mouth and nose. The victim is said to have passed out during the incident. When she regained consciousness afterwards, the suspect allegedly raped her.

A rape case was opened and the suspect is still at large, however, the FSC members are working hard to trace him.
