Two days ago, Leani van Schalkwyk posed the following question in the Middelburg Observer’s public Facebook group, “Hello, are there still people whose water and light bills are also ridiculously high this month??? Just want to confirm.”
What resulted, in response was an outpouring of angered and bewildered residents echoing Leani’s complaint in the comment section.
As previously reported by the Middelburg Observer, tariffs were scheduled to increase from July 1.

A significant average increase of 12.74 percent in electricity tariffs seemed drastic to many, however, very few members of the public attended the various budget Indabas to protest the adjusted rates.
Fortunately, property rates have not been affected, with a zero percent change.
Despite this being outlined earlier this year, criticism over the municipality’s messaging has spread like wildfire, with many members of the public left bemused at the steep rise in costs.
This has been made apparent by the following remarks left under Leani’s social media post.
“My account is between R4 000 and R5 000 usually. This month R13 000. Lekker nê,” Anna Pretorius chimed in.
Karin Boshoff stated, “Biggest problem is the rates go up yet salaries don’t go up. How is one supposed to cope?”
“Was expecting a terrible increase, but not nearly R4 000 more! There must be a mistake somewhere,” Izelda Viljoen said.
To ease any frustrations, here are the following average increases in rates and taxes:
• An average increase in property rates of 0 percent
• An average increase in the sewerage tariffs of 4,9 percent
• An average increase in the refuse tariffs of 4.9 percent
• An average increase in the water tariffs of 4,9 percent
• An average increase in the electricity tariffs of 12,74 percent
This should give residents an indication of what to expect when paying their monthly bills, if you need further information, make sure to contact your local Ward Councillor.
