Outrage as teacher caught on camera trying to cut learner’s braids

Community angered by school teacher trying to cut learner’s hair.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has lambasted the behaviour of a teacher at L.D Moetanalo Secondary School in Mhluzi, who was seen in video footage attempting to cut off a learner’s braids.

The Middelburg Observer spoke to the department’s spokesperson, Jasper Zwane, who confirmed that the incident did happen in Mhluzi.

The video was widely circulated on Facebook yesterday (Wednesday) and was shared more than 2 000 times.

Due to the learner being underage, the Middelburg Observer can’t identify her.

It is alleged that the school prohibits long braided hair.

The incident has sparked debates online.

In the video, the teacher can be seen holding a pair of scissors and violently pulling at the girl’s long braids.

Learners are laughing and screaming while she attempts to cut the girl’s hair. The learner in the video resists the haircut.

Zwane said the department does not condone the teacher’s behaviour and is investigating the matter.

He added that a formal statement regarding the matter will be released.
