(VIDEO) Decomposing body found inside substation

A gruesome discovery was made at a municipal electricity substation this afternoon.

The body of a decomposing man was found at around 13:00, attracting a large crowd of concerned residents.

It is alleged that the man was electrocuted by cables last week.

The incident happened near medical centres on Joubert Street.

The discovery attracted a large crowd of concerned residents.

Employees in the area told the Middelburg Observer there were electricity interruptions in the area last Friday.

They then called the municipality.

When the officials arrived they found a man who looked like he was sleeping.

During the weekend and on Monday, people in the area spoke about a foul smell emanating from the substation.

Some residents told the Observer they thought it was a dead animal.

It is not clear what the man was doing inside the substation or how long he had been dead.

At around 13:00, officials were dispatched to the scene and found the oozing decomposed body.

The body was transported to the pathology department for post-mortem results.

At the moment, the identity of the man is unknown.

Shortly after the body was transported by pathologists, municipal workers cleaned the area with chemicals due to the foul smell.

• An inquest docket was opened with the Middelburg police.
