The reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship Middleweight Champion of the World, Dricus ‘Stillknocks’ du Plessis, paid a special visit to our town on October 12.

The global icon participated in a question and answer session at Hoërskool Middelburg, where he spoke of his rise to stardom, as well as the trials and tribulations of reaching the apex of professional mixed martial arts.

Fans noted how gracious and humble the African champion was with his time, taking time to pose for photos and interact with fans on a personal level at a special Middies hosted VIP braai.

With his appearance at Hoërskool Middelburg, it was made apparent that Du Plessis is relishing his time breathing African air and spending time with his fellow countrymen, just as he outlined in the preamble to his fight with Israel Adesanya.

After handing ‘The Last Stylebender’ the first submission loss of his Ultimate Fighting Championship career, Du Plessis is embracing South Africa the way the world has embraced him.

• Mr and Miss Hoërskool Middelburg organised a touch rugby event earlier in the day to raise proceeds for charitable organisations.
The school told the Middelburg Observer that the entire day was a great success.
