Two arrested for break-ins during crime surge

Members from community safety and the private security sector combined forces to combat the surge of crime in Middelburg.

After a spike in break-ins, two suspects were arrested after being caught in the act of breaking in.

• According to Ms Juanitha Groenewald, chairperson of Middelburg Community Policing Forum (CPF), one suspect was apprehended while trying to break into a home in Jeppe Street on Friday afternoon.

Members of the CPF, Community In Blue and reaction officers from Titon Security responded to the scene resulting in the arrest.

The suspect was handed over to the police.

• A second suspect was arrested this morning by members of Hawk Security while breaking into a business premises in OR Tambo Street.

According to Hawk Security, reaction officers were dispatched after the company’s alarm went off.

CCTV footage from the control room showed two suspects on the premises after one of them used a panga to remove the spikes from the wall.

Upon the arrival of reaction officers, one of the suspects was caught climbing over the gate, resulting in a pursuit.

The one suspect was apprehended further down the street, while the second suspect managed to flee in possession of stolen property.

The apprehended suspect was also in possession of new ladies clothing believed to have been stolen elsewhere. He was also found in possession of drug paraphernalia.

A case has been opened and the suspect is due to appear on court later today.

• A resident from Erembee Street also reported finding a knife in Mineralia this morning.

The knife was likely used to steal cables from a street light.

According to Petrus Grobbelaar, he located the knife on the corner of Frank Bath- and Mangaan Street.

The knife was found close to a vandalised street light and its blackened tip suggests that it was used to cut the cables from the light.

The discovery was reported to the SAPS and Mr Grobbelaar destroyed the weapon on instruction of police officers.
