One died on the scene, the other in hospital

A Middelburg crime intelligence police member is in deep trouble and facing multiple criminal charges after a fatal accident in Clubville on Saturday that claimed the lives of two friends.

The fatal accident occurred around 11:30 on Van Der Merwe Street.

The police member and four passengers were travelling in a funeral procession when the vehicle they were driving in became airborne after striking a road dip at the busy Walter Sisulu Street crossing.

The vehicle struck a bakkie on the opposite side of the intersection before slamming into two trees.

Two of the passengers in the vehicle sadly passed away. One died on the scene and the other person died in hospital.

The known policeman, who has not been formally charged due to outstanding blood alcohol tests, was uninjured.

He now faces two charges of culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving.

The charges may later be upgraded with an additional charge of drunk driving.

The driver of the vehicle, which was struck by the airborne car, was slightly injured when his airbags were deployed.

His bakkie was, however, badly damaged.
