The Mpumalanga Traffic Department will now work flexi-shifts for ensure officer visibility, and reduce reaction times to road incidents around Middelburg.
The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, will officially launch the flexi-shift for provincial traffic officers on today.
Statistics have shown that most crashes happen on weekends and in the evening, or early hours of the morning, when traffic officers are not on duty.
In the year 2023, the highest number of crashes and fatalities were recorded between Friday and Monday from 14:00 to 22:00, and 22:00 to 06:00.
The flexi shift will see traffic officers working on weekends and evenings on routes that have been identified as the most dangerous.
The flexi shift will also run during the Festive Season which is usually characterized by high traffic volumes, and crashes.
