Three weeks and counting, Somaphepha still without water

The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality is battling a water crisis in Somaphepha, and some residents are complaining their taps ran dry over three weeks ago.

Those with means have resorted to buying water, while others have been forced to resort to extreme measures, like driving nearly 20km to Middelburg for water.

Farmers in the area have also extended a helping hand to residents; however, this is not enough.

Previously, Doornkop councillor Anphia Grobler expressed concern about a water crisis in her area, with at least 5 000 homes being affected.

She told the Middelburg Observer that Jo-Jo Tanks in the area are regularly dry for weeks.

While the municipality said there was a supply of water in Doornkop, illegal water collections were a major factor resulting in the shortage.

Mines have also sunk boreholes to alleviate the problem.

• The Middelburg Observer sent a media enquiry to the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality regarding the dire situation in Somaphepha.
