Kwagga caps 50th Springbok appearance with victory in Scotland

Often selected as an indispensable member of the ‘Bomb Squad’, Rassie Erasmus and the Springbok coaching staff granted the beloved forward the honour of experiencing the landmark match as a starter.

Despite Eben Etzebeth captaining the Boks on Sunday, HTS Middelburg legend Kwagga Smith was the man who led them onto the stage at Murrayfield Stadium, as he earned his 50th international cap for South Africa.

Wearing the number eight jersey, Kwagga did not let the sense of occasion keep him away from the action, as he remained a constant threat in terms of carries and tackling.

The Springboks coasted to victory in the end, with Scotland never truly threatening the steadfast Bok defence.

With one eye clearly on the upcoming test against England, South Africa kept the Scots on a tight leash, absorbing the second-half pressure that would repeatedly dither into a loss of possession for the host side.

Even with the introduction of heavy hitters such as Pieter-Steph du Toit and Siya Kolisi, the Boks never exited second gear. Fortunately, there proved to be very little risk of the Springboks stalling out to defeat.

And though the game may not have been the thrilling encounter many would have hoped for, the day will live long in the memory of fans of the industrious, two-time World Cup-winning, former 7s star, who learned to ply his trade right here in Middelburg.
