Rooies cyclist discharged

The 18-year-old Rooies cyclist who was injured in a hit-and-run has been discharged from hospital.

Lumardt Pienaar is finally home with his family after being discharged from the Flora Clinic where he received specialised care for severe epileptic seizures after the accident.

According to Lumardt’s mother, Raylene, the neurologist discharged Lumardt on Sunday after his medication was increased and seems to be managing his seizures effectively.

“Lumardt is still a bit tired and weak, but he is in good spirits and is excited to be home. This week is an important time for him to rest, and we believe he will grow stronger every day. We are so thankful for how quickly things have improved, but we know this couldn’t have been possible without the power of prayers, love, support and care. You have all guided us through this difficult time, and we could have never made it here without the amazing work of the medical team, as well as the support of family, friends Audeamus and the eMalahleni community. Above all, we give the honour and thanks to our Creator, who still has big plans for Lumardt,” Raylene said in a heartfelt message.

• Lumardt was injured in a hit-and-run last week Sunday evening while cycling in eMalahleni.
He was struck from his bicycle in the parking lot of the Saveways Complex, resulting in an injury to his arm.

Lumardt is epileptic, and the accident resulted in a surge of severe seizures that took a week to get under control.
He was initially admitted to the ICU of Life Cosmos Hospital but later transferred to the Flora Clinic due to his ongoing seizures.

The case is under the investigation of the Witbank SAPS.

• Lumardt has been a member of the Rooies Cycling Club for over three years and is a passionate athlete with plenty of achievements to his name, including seventh place nationally in XCO, as well as being crowned Mpumalanga Champion.
