Lifeguard who drowned identified

The Acting Spokesperson of the Municipality, Mr Sibusiso Chauke, just released a press statement about the incident where a lifeguard drowned at the Kees Taljaard Swimming Pool earlier today.

Towards midday today, 30 November, the Municipality experienced a grave loss when one of its Municipal lifeguards, Freddy Msiza (39) who worked for the Physical and Development Department, lost his life in a drowning accident.

The incident took place at the Kees Taljaard Swimming Pool when he rescued a 15-year-old boy from drowning.

“We understand the shock and tragedy of the Msizas sudden loss and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” the Acting Municipal Manager, Dr Elizabeth Shabalala, said.

In the meantime, residents are informed that the Taaljard swimming pool is temporarily closed and will open on Monday.

As many residents will be taking time to relax at our swimming pools, they are urged to be more cautious and adhere to all safety measures and tips provided on all notice boards.

Funeral arrangements and other details will be communicated in due course.
