Zimbabwean national remanded in custody after robbing, shooting

A suspect who was arrested in connection with the alleged robbing of a hitchhiker is remanded in custody.

According to information provided by the Media Spokesperson of the SAPS, Brig. Donald Mdhluli, Wiriranai Duba (42), appeared in the Middelburg Magistrates’s Court on Monday and is remanded in custody with his formal bail application being postponed until December 9.

Duba’s arrest followed after a hitchhiker was allegedly robbed while seeking a lift in Middelburg on Saturday night.

According to a media statement previously released by police, the hitchhiker was picked up by four men in a Hyundai Tucson that was registered in Duba’s name.

The four suspects then failed to drop the hitchhiker off at the agreed destination, and allegedly robbed him of his cellphone and other belongings.

The robbers demanded the victim’s PIN, and after stopping to withdraw money from the victim’s account, the hitchhiker fatally shot two of the occupants in the vehicle.

The victim sought help from a filling station, while the other two suspects fled the scene.

According to the statement, Duba was arrested after returning to the filling station shortly after the incident. Investigations then revealed that the vehicle was registered in his name.

Brig. Mdhluli confirmed that the hitchhiker has not been charged for fatally shooting two of the suspects, but that the weapon licensed to his name was confiscated and that investigations are still underway.
