A twist of fate: Man dies 8 days after allegedly setting ex-girlfriend on fire

The man who allegedly set his ex-girlfriend on fire a fortnight ago has died.

Last week, the family of the woman told the Middelburg Observer that her alleged attacker was in the same hospital room as her.

The victim, Promise Motubatsi (29), died last Wednesday after succumbing to her injuries; 80% of her body was severely burned during the traumatic ordeal.

The late Promise Motubatsi (29).

Her ex-boyfriend, Molake Aubury Moloto (42), died on Sunday at the Middelburg Provincial Hospital.

Last week, the Mpumalanga police told the Middelburg Observer that Moloto was still on the run after fleeing from the crime scene, and a manhunt had been launched.

This contradicted what the family told the Observer, saying that when they went to visit Promise in the hospital, they found Moloto in the same hospital room, leaving them angry and concerned.

Moloto was allegedly admitted to the hospital after he drank petrol in a suicide attempt.

According to an eyewitness, they saw Moloto running out of a burning room with his hand on fire, followed by Promise, whose entire body was engulfed in flames. Workers on the farm rushed Promise to the hospital.

It is alleged that Moloto fled the scene.

The couple broke up last February, and the family said the altercation broke out when Promise was moving her belongings to another room that was further away from Moloto.

The Observer reached out to Moloto’s family, who said they didn’t want to talk to the media.
