Residents flag suspicious blue BMW amid string of attempted break-ins
A suspicious looking blue BMW has been flagged by residents amid a string of weekly break-ins in Middelburg.
A resident of Viljoen Street in Middelburg South reported the BMW on the Middelburg CPF group yesterday evening shortly after 21:00, after the vehicle was seen driving up and down the street and scouting houses.
According to the resident, who wished to remain anonymous, the attempted break-ins started five weeks ago at the complex he resides in.
“The complex has electric fencing and palisades, but despite these measures thieves still find a way in. They first struck the one side of the complex five weeks ago, stealing electrical cables from the walls of one unit. A week afterwards, they struck again, stealing more cables on my side of the complex.”
A week ago, the resident came home at dusk and noticed that the motorised gate wouldn’t close after he had opened it.
“I went to investigate and saw that one of the eyes on the gate had been covered with foil. I saw three men sitting on the sidewalk, but they fled after seeing me.”
The evening afterwards the gate didn’t close again, after he came home much later in the evening.
“The eye had been closed with foil again. I started looking up and down the street when I noticed the dark blue BMW without registration plates driving very slowly up and down the street.”
According to the resident, the thieves struck again last night and he got a call from a neighbour saying the gate won’t close.
“When I went to investigate, I found that the electrical wires to the motor had been cut. We arranged to have someone repair the wires, and after the repairman had arrived, we spotted the same blue BMW driving up and down the street. I could see three occupants inside the vehicle. The BMW is a 1 Series and has no number plates on it. The BMW stood still at one point, watching us while the gate was being repaired, but once the man left, they quickly sped away in a different direction.”
According to the resident, there has been a string of break-ins and vehicle thefts. The repairman also confirmed of receiving many similar callouts, saying that the thieves are one step ahead of his efforts to fortify gate motors.
