Videos: Heavy rains – the aftermath!

The aftermath of the heavy rainfalls yesterday can be seen everywhere!

Huge potholes, which have formed all over town, as well as the low water bridge, which is still closed, are all signs of the aftermath of the heavy downpour of rain yesterday.

Residents of Kanonkop said they measured up to 52mm of rain, but in Mineralia, 70mm was measured yesterday!

The low water bridge next to the Kees Taljaard Stadium is still closed as the Klein Olifants River is overflowing after a sluice was lifted at the Middelburg Dam yesterday.

Middelburgers have also been warned to be vigilant on several emergency groups, especially with all the newly-formed potholes after the heavy rain.

• Motorists called the Observer and asked that everybody be warned about a big pothole on the R555 (old Middelburg/Witbank road), which some also called the beginning of a sinkhole, “It is very big and you don’t see it until it’s too late.”

The location of the pothole can be found HERE:

• On the corner of Cowen Ntuli and Viljoen streets, the municipality was working on a water pipe, but due to the rain yesterday, they couldn’t continue. There is now a massive hole in the road. The area is clearly cordoned off, but motorists are asked to drive slowly as they approach the area.

• There are several big potholes in Mandela Road between the four-way stop from Walter Sisulu and the turn-off to Federale Stene (behind Roberts Estate). The hole on the way to the Federale Stene turn-off was filled up with soil, but the one in the other direction is still open.

• On the corner of Cowen Ntuli and Walter Sisulu streets, big potholes have formed. Motorists who turn left from Cowen Ntuli into Walter Sisulu must turn wide to avoid the pothole.

• The rain also flushed open a part of the hole which was fixed a few weeks ago on the corner of Beyers Naude and Lilian Ngoyi. Motorists must also turn wide from Beyers Naude into Lilian Ngoyi Street.

• In areas where there was flooding over the roads yesterday, several potholes were also reported.
