Three in court for protected cycads worth R188 000

Three suspects appeared in court on Monday on charges of owning specially protected Lanatus Cycads worth R188 000.

Tony Jiyane (42), Sphesihle Ngwenya (33) and Stanley Shakwane (48) appeared for formal bail applications. Bail was denied and postponed to a later date to verify their addresses.

The suspects were arrested last week on the Slaghoek gravel road with 16 Lanatus Cycads in their possession.

• On the black market, the plants are normally sold at R185 per centimetre.
