(VIDEO) UPDATE: Search for body at Klein Olifant’s River ends, victim found

This comes after a search party was launched after reports were filed about a person drowning on Friday evening.

There were wails and screams as the family of the man who drowned three days ago gathered at the scene at around 11:00 today.

The body of the man who was washed away on Friday evening was retrieved from the Klein Olifants River by SAPS divers on Protea Street and Walter Sisulu Street near the municipal infrastructure building.

Police divers and paramedics shortly after retrieving the body.

This comes after a search party was launched after reports were filed about a person drowning on Friday evening.

When the Middelburg Observer journalists arrived on the scene, they found two family members of the deceased, and minutes later, more grieving family members arrived.

Paramedics and police officers were also on the scene.

According to the information, the deceased drowned after he allegedly crossed the Koppie Street low-lying bridge.

At the time, the bridge was flooded, and there were strong currents.

Earlier that day, the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality opened the sluice gate at Middelburg Dam after an intake of more than 700mm was reported.

Due to the flooding, the municipality also barricaded low-lying bridges.
