Kranspoort Pass remains closed for recovery of gas tanker

The N11 Kranspoort Pass remains closed to allow the recovery of an overturned gas tanker.

According to Johan Hamman, an instrumental role player in the stakeholder meetings conducted with SANRAL, the pass will remain closed for several hours and is likely to reopen either very late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Hamman, who has been liaising with the Middelburg Fire Department, has received information that another truck is en route to have the liquefied petroleum gas transferred, which is expected to take another four hours.

“Hazmat teams will then still have to clean up any spilled gas.”

Hamman described the situation as a bomb waiting to go off, “It is a very dangerous situation and motorists should avoid the area at all costs. The Stoffberg road should be used as an alternative route.”
