Residents warned of sharp spike in gate motor thefts

Middelburg residents have been urged to remain vigilant after a very sharp increase has been seen in the theft of gate motors.

Hans du Preez from Titon Security cautioned residents of an escalation in gate motor thefts on community safety groups, especially seen in Kanonkop on Monday and Tuesday evening.

Du Preez acknowledged that a gate motor was stolen on Monday night in Karee Street, followed by another theft in Springbok Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He added that, according to CCTV footage, it appears four suspects are behind the thefts.

While the Middelburg Observer received information that 20 stolen gate motors were reported to the police on Monday and Tuesday, in Kanonkop alone, media spokesperson for the Middelburg SAPS, Sgt Nhlanhla Mdluli, could not confirm the statistics.

She, however, confirmed that the SAPS is warning residents of an escalation in gate motor thefts, observed since March.

“Currently, all cases are under investigation and the community is requested to assist with information that may assist in apprehending the suspects,” Mdluli concluded.
