Multiple drains, manholes clogged again!

The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality urges residents to stop illegal dumping, which is aggravating sewage spills.

A manhole behind Laerskool C.R. Swart has been blocked and overflowing for days.

The municipality is aware of the problem, which is on Kogel Street, and said it will tend to the blockage.

Most blockages are caused by objects thrown into the pipes, which results in drains and manholes becoming clogged. Objects like dirty diapers, clothes, teaspoons, grease, oils, chemicals, sanitary pads, bottles and plastic are normally at fault.

The municipality is also in the process of unclogging drains and manholes in Rockdale.

Residents are encouraged to stop illegal dumping, as it also contributes to the blockages.

The municipality also wants to warn residents that dumping waste in public open spaces is an offence.

The municipality can:

• Confiscate the item or tool that is used to commit the offence.
• Issue a spot fine that will be incorporated into municipal accounts.
• Issue a summons to appear in court for contravention of the municipal by-laws.
