Pipe bursts galore in Lahore – Eastdene residents ‘fed-up’

“There today, gone tomorrow,” is what the water says in Eastdene.

Residents of Lahore Street, Eastdene are at wit’s end with continued water interruptions due to numerous burst pipes.

According to Mr Zaahed Bulia, residents are fed-up and are now warning the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality with strike action if the persistent issues aren’t addressed.

An irate Mr Bulia called the Middelburg Observer on Monday night after another pipe burst left the street without water and his driveway damaged.

“We have been sitting without water for more than two weeks, due to burst pipes. They repaired one on Sunday only for another burst further down on Monday. We’ve had six or seven burst pipes in one week!”

Mr Bulia further accused the municipal workers of “shoddy workmanship”, saying his driveway and the street resembles a warzone due to open ditches.

“Every time we report the burst pipes, it takes the municipality four hours to respond, because the workers want overtime.”

During an inspection by the Middelburg Observer on Tuesday, water was flowing down Koets Street from as far as the corner of Verdoorn- and Cowen Ntuli Street.

A large portion of Lahore Street was also dug up by workers busy with repairs, and large slaps of concrete and paving bricks from several driveways also stood in piles. Two workers were in Lahore Street busy with repairs.

“As residents we are frustrated and we are ready to strike,” Mr Bulia concluded.

• The Middelburg Observer sent a media enquiry to the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality but no response was received by the time of publication.
