Eat a cupcake, raise hope, beat cancer

Cupcakes weaponised against cancer.

Residents with a sweet tooth can order cupcakes for payday while donating to the fight against cancer.

It’s time for the annual Cupcakes of Hope fundraiser and Life Midmed Hospital is again pulling out all the stops to fight cancer.

The hospital launched its own fundraiser under Cupcakes of Hope after Dr Danie du Plessis heard about the initiative.

He got hospital staff involved and raised R64 000 in cupcake sales and donations towards the battle against the Big C.

Last year, Sister Caroline Henderson (Unit Manager at Middok 24/7) baked more than 700 cupcakes by herself.

This year, Midmed has received tremendous support from the community to up the ante.

Du Plessis said that while hospital staff also contribute greatly to the array of available cupcakes, they have received incredible support from one local school, cell groups from churches, the outside medical fraternity, like Brandon Orthopedic Services, as well as a string of local bakers.

He added that many other institutions and businesses also contributed.

The cupcakes will be sold on Friday, September 26, at Life Midmed Hospital.

Orders can also be placed already to avoid disappointment.

“I’m humbled by the support we’re receiving,” Du Plessis told the Middelburg Observer.

Last year more than 3 700 cupcakes were sold.

“We’re definitely aiming to top that.”

Cupcakes of Hope is a non-profit public benefit organisation dedicated to supporting children battling cancer in South Africa.

Residents who want to support Cupcakes of Hope can contact Du Plessis on 082 853 2057 to place orders.

Those who want to show support on Friday can visit the hospital with cash in hand.

Donations are also welcome.
