Police divers retrieve body of fourth drowning victim in Middelburg

Another drowning reported in Middelburg amid heavy rains, floods.

After the bodies of three women were recovered from the Klein Olifants River earlier today, the body of another drowning victim was also recovered from Athlone Dam.

It took a police diver just five minutes to recover the body of a 20-year old drowning victim.

The man drowned around 15:30 this afternoon.

The man was diving from a platform at the dam with friends when he failed to resurface.

A group of teenagers and two adults immediately jumped in to help the man whose brother was also in the group of swimmers.

When they failed to successfully bring the victim to the surface a distress call was shared on various local WhatsApp groups.

Police divers basically drove from the scene where the bodies of three women were retrieved around the Riverside area, after flood waters swept them away from the railway bridge on the old-Belfast road; to Athlone Dam.

The identity of the Athlone Dam victim is yet to be released.

Meanwhile, the DA’s Hennie Niemann, who was also on the scene at Athlone Dam, recorded a video warning swimmers to be extra cautious, especially in areas where no lifeguards are present.

Athlone Dam has a large notice at its entrance warning swimmers of the fact that a lifeguard is not available.
