Siyabonga Sibiya (18) of Mhluzi is appealing to the local community to help raise R58 500 for his upcoming trip to the Dubai Sevens.
Growing up, his weekends were spent on the soccer field playing for Pretty Stars.
It was only in Grade Nine, when former coach Tiaan Herbst introduced him to the oval ball, that his athletic journey took a dramatic turn.
“He put me in when I was doing Grade Nine and taught me the game. I started loving it from there. I played hard, and more opportunities began to open up for me,” said Sibiya.
Today, the Hoërskool Kanonkop Grade 12 learner, who studies technical mathematics and civil technology, draws inspiration from Springbok scrum-half Grant Williams.
Looking ahead, Sibiya hopes to turn professional and join a franchise like the Durban-based Sharks, praising their track record of giving young school-leavers a chance in high-intensity rugby.
Selection opens door to international stage
Following an outstanding performance across three selection games in July, Sibiya earned a spot on the New Beginning Sports team to compete in the fast-paced Dubai Sevens tournament, scheduled for November 25 to December 1.
He said he is one of four young athletes from Middelburg selected for the prestigious event.
However, talent alone has not been enough to get him on the plane.
Despite being selected to represent the country in England last year and Turkey earlier this year, financial constraints prevented him from travelling both times.
Family appeals for financial assistance
Now, his family is making a plea to the local community and businesses to ensure history does not repeat itself.
“My family is currently helping me raise R58 500 to cover travel expenses,” Sibiya said, noting that the amount covers tournament entry fees, accommodation, and breakfasts.
His mother, Sphiwe Madonsela, highlighted how crucial this moment is for her son’s career after previous setbacks.
“Financial support is really needed because this is his third selection,” Madonsela said. “We are still trying to seek assistance, and hopefully, this time he will be able to go.”
