Middelburg SPCA hero ‘Sarge’ retires after 45 years
Tears, applause and raw emotion filled the Middelburg SPCA as the community honoured Segeant ‘Sarge’ Msiza – the man who devoted 45 years to protecting animals. His retirement closes one of the longest, most impactful chapters in the organisation’s history.
The Middelburg SPCA reached a historic and emotional moment on December 6, when staff, community members, and long-time supporters gathered to honour a man whose name has become synonymous with dedication: Segeant ‘Sarge’ Msiza.

After 45 years of loyal, relentless service, Sarge is retiring – and the tribute held in his honour left no dry eyes. For nearly half a century, he was the steady, compassionate force behind thousands of rescues, heartbreaking cases, cruelty investigations, and recovery stories. While many came and went, he stayed, day after day, shaping the very heartbeat of the SPCA.

At the ceremony, guests shared emotional memories as Sarge received a Certificate of Achievement marking his extraordinary service. Photos from decades past reminded everyone just how many lives, human and animal, he quietly changed.
“Sarge isn’t just an employee… he is the SPCA. When animals were at their worst, he showed them kindness. When days were tough, he kept going. His legacy won’t fade; it’s built into these walls.” Senior Inspector Petro Oberholzer said.

The celebration radiated warmth and gratitude as community members, co-workers, and family sat together to honour the man who devoted his life to protecting the voiceless. Laughter mixed with tears, and every person present understood the gravity of the moment: a chapter this big doesn’t close often.
Sarge’s retirement marks the end of an era; a monumental 45-year legacy of loyalty, humility, and unwavering commitment to animal welfare in Middelburg.
From the SPCA and the entire community: thank you, Sarge. Your work changed lives. Your kindness changed futures.
And your legacy will stand for generations.
