191km/h Shock: Three arrested on N4 near Middelburg

Mpumalanga traffic officers arrested three motorists on the N4 near Alzu for extreme speeding, with one clocked at a shocking 191 km/h. Authorities warn reckless drivers that there will be no mercy this festive season.

Three motorists were arrested for excessive speeding during a targeted traffic operation on the N4 near Alzu, just outside Middelburg, on 24 December 2025.

According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, traffic law enforcement officers stopped the drivers after recording the following alarming speeds in a 120 km/h zone:

• 191 km/h
• 182 km/h
• 167 km/h

All three motorists were arrested on the spot and later released on R5 000 bail each.

“Reckless Driving Will Not Be Tolerated”

The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, praised traffic officers for their decisive action and issued a stern warning to motorists abusing South Africa’s roads.

“Excessive speed is one of the major contributors to road fatalities. Every driver must obey the rules to prevent avoidable tragedies,” Macie said.

Festive season enforcement intensified:

Authorities have confirmed that speed operations and roadblocks will continue across Mpumalanga, especially on high-risk routes such as the N4, which sees increased traffic volumes during the festive season.

Motorists are urged to slow down, obey speed limits, and remember that reckless driving not only endangers their own lives, but also those of innocent road users.

The message from traffic authorities is clear: Speeding will land you in handcuffs – not at your holiday destination.
