New Year babies welcomed by Mayor at King Nyabela Hospital
While fireworks marked the arrival of 2026, the new year also began with new life as babies were born in the early hours of New Year’s Day at King Nyabela Hospital.
The Executive Mayor of the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, together with municipal officials, paid a special visit to the hospital on January 1 to welcome the New Year’s Day babies and congratulate their mothers following a busy night in the maternity ward.
Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela joined the mothers in celebrating the arrival of the newly born bundles of joy at the King Nyabela Hospital. Two babies were delivered, both little girls.

Health authorities confirmed that dozens of babies were delivered across Mpumalanga on New Year’s Day, with births recorded in hospitals throughout the province, including facilities in the Nkangala District, where Middelburg is situated.
While final figures may vary as reports are consolidated, early indications point to a steady number of deliveries as the year began. Provincial health figures indicate that approximately 50 babies were born across Mpumalanga on New Year’s Day, with a near-equal number of boys and girls welcomed into the world.
At King Nyabela Hospital, the mayor and officials met with families and frontline healthcare workers, acknowledging both the joy of new beginnings and the commitment of staff who remained on duty throughout the festive season.
Officials used the visit to express gratitude to healthcare workers for their dedication during a demanding period, noting that even in challenging times, the arrival of new life continues to symbolise hope, renewal, and fresh beginnings for communities across the province.
