WATCH: If they could, there would be cheers in the cemetery

Steve Tshwete Local Municipality praised for work to keep town tidy.

If the people lying in the cemetery could applaud, they would certainly have done so this week.

Where loved ones’ tears were shed among the long grass, it was mowed clean.

After months, the overgrown cemetery is clean again.

This is commendable.

This gives one hope.

It is especially touching to see the children’s graves, where most of the tears probably flow.

On Thursday morning, Councillor San-Mari Wait praised Dalene Lamprecht, head of parks, who goes out of her way to make the town liveable.

She said Lamprecht is performing miracles with the budget she has at her disposal.

• Residents also expressed their gratitude for the roads that have been painted recently.

• There was also joy after the stand on the corner of Jeppe and Park streets was cleaned up.

“I take my hat off to the guys who worked there yesterday. Everything was cut off and driven away. All the rubbish was picked up,” wrote a resident of the area.

• Residents expressed their appreciation for the way in which the park in Clubville is maintained by a private initiative. The park is an example for other problem parks, such as the Lion’s Park.

• Councillor Wait said some officials and workers go out of their way to keep Middelburg the Town of the Year that it was.

She told of a garbage truck that had a defect and dumped rubbish in the road. The workers walked behind the truck and picked up the rubbish with their hands.

“Residents must also do their part to keep the town clean. If they visit the cemetery and clean up whenever they can, it will help a lot.”
