Middelburg Dam at 99% – Caution as sluice gate opens

Middelburg Dam sluice gate to open at 23:00 tonight - stay clear of Klein Olifants River.

The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality has issued an urgent warning after the Middelburg Dam reached 99% capacity, earlier this evening, Saturday April 25.

With inflows still running high, pressure is building and action is required. One sluice gate will be opened at 23:00 tonight to release water and stabilise levels.

Don’t test the water

Residents are urged to stay clear of the Klein Olifants River. Water levels can rise quickly and without warning once the gate is opened.

Community and Emergency Services (CES) will monitor the situation through the night.

For now, the message is simple.

Stay away, stay alert, stay safe.
