Midack and Middelburg Marathon Club ready for Comrades

Two beginners and one runner with 22 Comrades races under their belt.
Midack has five participants taking part in the Comrades ultra-marathon from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, the so-called Up Run.
This is the 99th Comrades.

George Claassen, Middelburg High School’s principal in 1961, won the race that year in a time of 6:07:07.
James Faber is the Midack man with experience, while Faith Maruziva and Koos van Wyk are taking on the Big C for the first time.
Retha Strydom has four Comrades under her belt, and Vanessa Haarhoff has six.

Middelburg Marathon Club has several experienced runners participating this year, including Jean Malan, who has completed 28 races, and Jacob Mmameshi, who has completed 20 races.
The club has four runners taking part in their first Comrades: Renier van Jaarsveld, Herman Sithole, Zander Malan, and Danie du Plessis.

Samson Vilakazi will be competing in his 10th Comrades for his permanent green number.
Other Middelburg Marathon Club participants, with their number of Comrades races, are: Ryno Edwards (2), Rebone Modipa (4), Gerhard van Wyk (1), Peter Verster (4), Leon Joubert (4), Marguerite van Wyk (1), Selby Thlou (10), Cedric Campher (3), Sannie Uys (2), Audrey Turpin (3), Herman van Niekerk (4), and Wendy Dippenaar (8).

Tobie van den Bergh

Tobie started as a journalist in September 1975. He was appointed editor of the Middelburg Observer in 1982 where he worked until he retired in 2024.
