VIDEO: Wildfire damaged water pipes? Not true!

Thousands of litres of wasted water flowing into field

Pipes that burned are a woolly story.

The WhatsApp message that is being circulated saying a wildfire in Dennesig North damaged water pipes yesterday, is not true.
What is true is that there is a pipe from which thousands of litres of water are flowing into a field.
The Middelburg Observer went to investigate this morning and found no wildfire and no burnt water pipes.

Road scraped

It is unknown whether the pipe from which the water is currently flowing was damaged due to poor workmanship.
A cyclist who was in the area yesterday said it is clear that the road where the water is currently flowing down was scraped yesterday afternoon.

Councillor Johann Dyason said he shared the information after a resident in Kitchener Street informed him there was a wildfire and she could spell ‘rubber’. She apparently assumed the low water pressure in Dennesig was due to the fire.

While combing the field, several fires were found at the old landfill site in Dennesig North. A strong smell of burning rubber was also detected.

Urgent intervention needed

If the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality does not intervene urgently, the town will lose thousands upon thousands of litres of water.

@middelburgobserver

A major pipe burst in Dennesig North has nothing to do with previous WhatsApp messages suggesting that a runaway veldfire had damaged the PVC-pipeline. Midelburg is transitioning from old asbestos pipes to less burst prone PVC pipes. Sadly, water is still being wasted by the megalitres, taxpayers pay an arm and a leg for.

Helen Zille can come and swim in Middelburg, not in a pothole, but in a new Olifants River in Dennesig North, where thousands of litres of water flow into a field.
