Repairs and delays expected on R555 outside Middelburg

Towing services urge drivers to yield to emergency vehicles and consider alternative routes to avoid peak-hour congestion.

Motorists travelling between Middelburg and eMalahleni face delays today following an earlier multi-vehicle crash and ongoing roadworks on the R555 old Witbank Road.

A major multi-vehicle crash on the route earlier today resulted in significant traffic delays and contribute to congestion during this afternoon’s peak travel period.

Roadworks are currently taking place in both directions of the R555, adding to the delays along the busy route.

Louwtjie Swart from Wollies Towing and Recovery has also urged motorists to remain alert and make way for emergency vehicles.

Swart reminded drivers that when an ambulance, fire and rescue vehicle, police vehicle or traffic vehicle approaches with its emergency lights or siren activated, motorists should remain calm, slow down and give the vehicle enough space to pass safely.

“Every second counts in an emergency,” said Swart.

Drivers are advised to reduce their speed, remain vigilant and approach roadworks and accident areas with caution.

Motorists who can use an alternative route are encouraged to do so, particularly during late afternoon peak traffic times today.
