VIDEO: Middelburg remembers landmark cycle shops as era ends

As long-standing bicycle institutions fade into local history, enthusiasts look back on decades of memories while modern shops step up.

Middelburg used to have two legendary bicycle shops.

One was Middelburg Fietswinkel on Jan van Riebeeck Street (Cowen Ntuli), which belonged to ‘Oom’ Boy Jordaan; the other was Tip Top Cycle House in the Eastdene Centre.
After Jordaan’s death, that shop closed its doors.

Now, Tip Top Cycle House, which operated for more than 30 years, has also closed its doors.

Many among the older generation will remember both shops with nostalgia.

Middelburg Fietswinkel was more than just a bicycle shop; it stocked a vast array of items, and young residents would spend hours there.

A new era for local cyclists

Today, Johnny’s Bargain World, located near the old Jan van Riebeeck Street, offers a similar experience.
Cycling enthusiasts can purchase everything they need for their bicycles.

In addition to a wide range of cycling accessories, the shop also services bicycles and carries out repairs.
