Unlicensed firearm found during stop and search

The four failed to take ownership of the pistol, which was lying on the floor of the VW Golf 6 they were travelling in, in Ohrigstad.

Poloko Julius Lettoane (29), Erina Mondlane (32), Mako Simon Mohale (30), and Ezekiel Motlaitlai (29), who are all facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and contravention of the Immigration Act, are expected to reappear before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (January 27).

They were arrested last Thursday in Ohrigstad on the R36 and R533 intersection during a police stop and search operation.

Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the police stopped a silver VW Golf 6 with four occupants inside and discovered a silver Taurus self-loading pistol, a magazine, and 13 live rounds of ammunition.

Ledwaba indicated that none of the occupants could explain the ownership or lawful possession of the firearm, resulting in their immediate arrest.

“Further investigations revealed that two of the suspects were in contravention of the Immigration Act,” Ledwaba said.

He added that the circumstances surrounding the possession of the gun and ammunition are still under police investigation.

The suspects made their first appearance in court last Friday.
