Sabelo at Middelburg Rugby Club!
Sabelo Nhlapo is a star rugby player for the Pumas, but the big prop is on the road to recovery after a serious bicep injury.
And the road has lead him to a pit-stop at Middelburg Rugby Club where he aims to get some much-needed game time ahead of the upcoming Currie Cup season.
“It is tough to say when I will be back in the pink jersey, but hopefully I will soon be contributing to the team again. It is all about building match fitness, confidence and sharpness at this point.”
The 27-year old has already played two games for the club and the stint has revived his love for the game.
“I love the vibe and passion that the boys have for their club and for rugby; it’s infectious. Playing alongside them has really made me enjoy the game again.
It has taken me back to the roots and the reasons why I continue to play, and that is for the gees and the enjoyment. I have nothing but respect for the club and the people of Middelburg.”
Playing for Middelburg means that he is also reunited with his former teammate from the Sharks u/21, Louis Roos.
“There is never a dull moment with Rosie around. He is a bit of a class clown and is good at taking away tension and nervousness with his antics on, and off the field. He is a great team man.”
At 1.89m and 115kg, Nhlapo is a big man and does not physically have to stand back for many players.
“But I believe I am my own toughest opponent. Everyone I come up against, puts up a fight, and everyone presents a certain degree of toughness and a unique challenge. I choose not to focus on them as much as I concentrate on my own abilities.”
The former pupil of Highlands North Boys High has been in action at two junior world cups and has winners medals from two Varsity Cups (with TUKS), the Vodacom Cup and the National Club Championships in his display cabinet.
With each format – Junior Springboks, Varsity Cup, club and provincial – presenting its own unique challenges, what does he enjoy the most?
“I really have enjoyed all formats and campaigns that I have been involved in. Every team has its own special place in my heart.”
Always a team player, Nhlapo wants to deliver for the Pumas this season.
“I want to help the team to qualify for the Premier Division and then go on to be serious contenders for the trophy. We have a great squad and I am itching to contribute to the success of the Pumas family.”
Enthusiasm for the game is something that every fan wants to see in a rugby player. And Sabelo Nhlapo has it in abundance.
