Pink Puma women are the champions

The Mpumalanga women’s rugby team won the first division final against the Leopards 21–8.

The victory could be the start of an explosion in women’s rugby.

With the women’s Springboks qualifying for the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday against the Black Ferns, there is suddenly a boom in women’s rugby in the country.

The women in green and gold achieved a historic victory over Italy that made South Africa look at women’s rugby with new eyes.

Coach Swys de Bruyn’s united the team into a tight unit.

To reach the final, the Puma women achieved victories over Griquas 39–29, Griffons 26–19, Leopards 17–7, Limpopo 29–12, and Valke 81–10.

Their only defeat was against the SWD women with 37–19.

The leading scorers this season were Sandisile Mkhabela, with 70 points, Megan Guambe, with 40, Ntombikayise Mhlongo, with 30 and Sesihle Maguga, with 20.

Sibusiso Ngomane coached the team.

Former Steelcrest High School pupils Christelle Ross and Angel Mokwana played for the team, while Precious Mamaila, who is still at Steelcrest, was also in action in pink.

There was even a Mozambican, Megan Guambe, in the team.

According to the Mpumalanga Rugby Union, women’s rugby is growing in leaps and bounds in the province, although they currently mainly play 10s.
There are 15 schools that offer girls’ rugby from u/14, u/16, and first teams.
