Heart claims director of public safety

News of the sudden passing of Middelburg's director of public safety from a heart attack this weekend, sent shockwaves through the municipality on Monday.

Mr Ahmed Sadek Ismail Seedat suffered the heart attack at home on Saturday.

He was appointed chief traffic officer in January 2002 and became the head of the licencing department in 2006.

From then, up to the end of 2013, he managed the department so effectively, that it was recognized as one of the best countrywide.

During this period, he was also elected president of the national institute of licence officers.

On January 1 last year, he was promoted to director of public safety, seeing him take charge of the licencing department, emergency services, as well as traffic and safety services.

He held the position with distinction until his sudden passing.

“While Mr Seedat was in control of these departments, I was able to rest assured that matters were effectively overseen, affording me the opportunity to focus on other municipal issues,” municipal manager, Mr Willie Fouché said on Monday.

“The fact that we are losing such capable leaders, one after the other, should be a matter of grave concern for us all,” Mr Fouché said.

He expressed his sincerest condolences to his colleagues, family and friends.
