Fire destroys another townhouse at Countryview Estates
MIDRAND - Two months after a fire destroyed contents of a townhouse at Country View Estates in Midrand, another fire has destroyed a townhouse within the same residential complex.
The unit owner, who did not want to be named, said she thinks she may have forgotten to switch off an iron she had used that morning. “Thankfully no one was inside when the fire broke out,” she said.
A representative of the body corporate, Liz Penny, said this was the second fire in nine years. “This is an unfortunate incident that could have been avoided,” she said.
City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi said, “Such incidents are concerning. We want to advise residents to look after heating and lighting appliances and switch them off after use and unplug [them] from the wall.”
He explained that it is important for residents to utilise the Basic Emergency Safety And Fire Education (Besafe) centres in their areas where they can receive training on basic fire and first aid techniques which will help them in an emergency.
“In offices people need to make sure that before they leave all electrical items are switched off to avoid fire incidents.”
