Chairperson of Eskom board steps down
JOBURG – Eskom board chairperson Zola Tsotsi has agreed to step down to allow the board to focus on the core issues facing the parastatal.
The power utility has confirmed his resignation which comes after he was accused of acting improperly. The company’s Twitter handle @Eskom_MediaDesk stated that Eskom board and chairperson have this morning agreed to part ways amicably and that Doctor Ben Ngubane has been appointed acting chairperson.
The company said, “Acting chairman Ben Ngubane thanked Mr Tsotsi for the selfless decision he took in placing the interests of the company first.”
Earlier this month, Tsotsi suspended four senior executives at Eskom including CEO Tshediso Matona.
Eskom stated that the board and the chairperson held a constructive discussion over night about charting the way forward for the power utility. The company announced that Tsotsi has resigned in the interest of the company and the country and this has been done to allow the board to focus on the core issues that Eskom is facing.
Matona is still on suspension together with three other executives. Matona’s attempt to have his suspension lifted by the Labour Court failed on Friday. The court struck his case from the roll, saying he had not shown he would suffer irreparable harm were he to remain on suspension.
Matona, appointed as CEO just last September, was suspended along with three other senior executives earlier this month, pending an investigation ordered by the power utility’s board into allegations of wrongdoing.
Meanwhile the public electricity entity also revealed that the load shedding prognosis for today remained medium to high dependent on the performance of the power plant.
