Pearson Institute of Higher Education holds safety activation

MIDRAND – Midrand police and other stakeholders together with the PIHE held a safety activation programme.

Midrand police together with the Metro police and emergency services held a safety activation campaign at the Pearson Institute of Higher Education (PIHE) on 18 April.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) had previously held talks with students in order to establish some of the main problems students are faced with and crime was one of the dominant issues.

Therefore, both the SRC and the PIHE management decided to seek the assistance of law enforcement to help them alleviate crime in the area and to ensure the safety of students.

During the three days of activation, students were given pepper sprays to protect them when travelling alone and outside the campus premises and were also advised on other safety tips stating that people should mainly travel in groups and avoid dark or bushy areas.

One of the students, Chantal Bombwe, said she was advised not to use her cell phone when travelling to school or home, as well as not to partake in activities that will draw attention to her, such as loud music among others.

Nkosana Ngwenya the SRC vice president and student services for the PIHE said he believes that the activation was successful and was able to reach many students.

Ngwenya also highlighted that he was under the impression that the activation was going to be of a higher calibre than it was and believes that was mainly due to the fact that the campaign was run more by management rather than the SRC.
