Minnaar confirms taxi driver and JMPD officer altercation caught of video happened in July

MIDRAND – Captain Minnaar said that the Chief of JMPD David Tembe is extremely concerned that the public only took videos of the incident, instead of call for help or trying to assist.

According to Captain Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Metro police, an internal investigation into a fight between a JMPD officer and a taxi driver has revealed that the incident occurred in July this year.

The incident was caught on video and has been circulating on social media – and caused quite a stir. “A male JMPD officer and a female JMPD officer tried to stop a taxi driver for a traffic violation on the Old Pretoria Main Road. When the driver fled from the officers, he disregarded two traffic lights and endangered other motorists,” said Minnaar.

Minnaar explained that the officers managed to stop the driver and that’s when an altercation took place, while the female officer was calling for backup. “The taxi driver was immediately arrested and charged at Bramley Police Station for reckless and negligent driving as well as assault because the male officer injured his right hand.”

Minnaar said that the Chief of JMPD David Tembe is extremely concerned as to why the public chose to only take videos instead of call for help, or even try to assist the officers.

The case against the taxi driver is still pending.
