Midrand Police Station celebrated 23 convictions on October 18.
Station Commander Brigadier David Tsotsotso welcomed the news and said the convictions would serve as a deterrence to those who were found to be on the wrong side of the law.
Tsotsotso explained that regardless of how heavy the sentence may be, it could damage one’s chances of employment or other opportunities in life.
“There is no such thing as a small crime or criminal, everyone with a criminal record will be grouped as a criminal,” he added.
He said further convictions were expected as more suspects were expected in court for various crimes such as gender-based violence and femicide.
“Midrand Police Station will also strive towards protecting the victims and those affected by crime. We will at all times listen to the demands and concerns of the community,” Tsotsotso concluded.
The convictions were as follows:
• 12 shoplifters were sentenced to 10 to 30 days or fined R500 to R3 000.
• Three defrauders were sentenced to 30–60 days or fined R3 000 to R6 000.
• Five suspects arrested for theft were sentenced to 10–30 days or must pay fines of R2 000 to R10 000.
• A suspect was sentenced for assault and common domestic violence and was handed down a sentence of 10 years with five years suspended.
