Gara chairperson says they will work with JRA to get some roads tarred
John Mphatsoe says they hope to work with the city's departments to have public awareness programmes and educate the residents so that they don't find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
The newly elected Glen Austin Residents Association (Gara) chairperson said they want to improve the state of infrastructure in the suburb.
John Mphatsoe, who was elected for the fourth time in a row as the chairperson on March 16, said, “This term we are going to work with Johannesburg Roads Agency to get all gravel roads to be tarred and Belvedere Road to be resurfaced as it is badly damaged, near Olifantsfontein Road. We will continue to persuade the City of Johannesburg and the Provincial government to install solar masts in the area as we have no streetlights.”
Austin Road is another that has not been tarred for about 33 years. In the article, Austin Road is to be graded, [Week ending 14 July 2023], JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “At this stage, JRA has no plans to upgrade the tar road. Concerning how often the road gets graded and maintained, the road gets graded once every quarter.”
Mphatsoe said residents pay A-class rates and deserve to have proper infrastructure equating to what they are paying for. He added they were also hoping to work with the city’s various departments to organise public awareness programmes about building controls, business compliance and the processes involved. This will ensure that residents don’t fall on the wrong side of the law.
“Lastly, we wish to inform the public out there that Glen Austin is not an industrial place where they can operate a fuel depot and have fuel tankers and 34-tonne drop-side trucks. There is an industrial area in Midrand for such businesses.”
