Midrand High School Grade 12 learner is laid to rest

Grade 12 head at the school Nokuthula Carol Zimo said Michael Jnr Chauke’s easygoing spirit and warmth made Midrand High School a brighter place.

Midrand High School learner Michael Jnr Chauke was laid to rest in Diepsloot on August 30. Described as an avid music lover and basketball sensation, Chauke, affectionately known as MJ, was run down in an alleged hit-and-run incident in Noordwyk on August 23.

Speaking at his memorial on August 27, Grade 12 head Nokuthula Carol Zimo said Chauke’s time with them was far too short, yet it was filled with a light and presence that will never be forgotten. “MJ was a young man who lived life on his own terms.

A nonconformist at heart, he marched to the beat of his own drum and managed to be nothing but himself. He never rushed through life. Somehow, he always managed to take his time, reminding us that it is often in the stillness that true joy is found.” She said MJ loved rap music deeply and dreamed of becoming a music artist one day.

On the basketball court, wearing the Midrand High School colours, he showed the same passion, spirit, and determination he always played with.

After the memorial service, Chauke’s peers and teammates went to the basketball court, lit candles before wrapping up super dunks for him.

Zimo said both music and basketball were more than just hobbies for him; they were ways he expressed his creativity and soul. “MJ was mischievous at times, but never disrespectful. Whenever he made a mistake, he had a way of softening hearts with his sincere: ‘I’m sorry’, spoken in the gentle voice that so many of us will remember.

“He had a rare gift of making everyone feel seen, valued, and appreciated. Above all, MJ was kind. He was loved by his friends, teachers, and family, not only for what he did, but for who he was. His easy-going spirit and warmth made Midrand High a brighter place.”

She said that though they grieve his loss, they also celebrate the gift of his life. A life that showed them the courage of being authentic, the joy of living with passion, and the beauty of walking one’s own path. Zimo said MJ’s journey reminds them that even when a life is brief, it can leave behind a legacy of love, laughter, and inspiration.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may we carry forward his memory by living with kindness, courage, and authenticity… Just as he did.”
