Ekurhuleni Police arrest man for fire at teacher’s house

65-year-old Mduduzi Kunene confessed to the fire that killed the teacher's 21-year-old son. He is now in custody awaiting a bail hearing on October 10.

Following the arson attack on his house, a Eqinisweni Secondary School teacher is battling for his well-being in the hospital in Tzaneen, and 65-year-old Mduduzi Kunene has been arrested.

Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela has confirmed that Kunene has been arrested in connection with the fire that destroyed the teacher’s home in Klipfontein, and killed his 21-year-old son.

The devastating tragedy occurred on September 15, leaving the family shattered and the community in mourning for the untimely death.

Kunene appeared before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on October 6, facing murder and arson charges.

He was remanded in custody until October 10 for a formal bail application.

Sekgobela said. “Information was received which led to the arrest of one man who confessed that he was responsible for the burning of the teacher’s house, where the teacher’s son died.”

The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, expressed sorrow over the incident.

“The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. Our psycho-social and employee wellness team was dispatched to the affected employee and family, accordingly.”
